Boating with Kids: Safety Tips Every Family Should Know

Spending time on the water with your kids is one of the best ways to create lasting family memories. But when children are on board, safety needs to come first. Here are some key tips to keep every trip fun and stress-free:

1. Life Jackets Are Non-Negotiable

Every child should always wear a properly fitted, age-appropriate life jacket. Make sure it’s Coast Guard approved and snug (but comfortable) – remember that kids grow fast, so check the fit each season.

2. Set Clear Boat Rules

Before leaving the dock, explain simple, non-negotiable rules like:

  • Stay seated when the boat is moving
  • Keep hands and feet inside
  • Always ask before leaning over the edge

3. Sun & Hydration Protection

Pack extra sunscreen, hats, and plenty of water. Kids are more vulnerable to heat exhaustion and sunburn, especially during  long, hot days on the water.

4. Teach Basic Safety Early

Even young kids can learn simple things like how to spot life jackets, where the whistle is, and how to call for help. Older children can be shown how to use radios or phones in an emergency.

5. Bring Snacks & Entertainment

A hungry or bored child can get restless quickly. Pack easy-to-eat snacks and a few toys or books to keep little ones comfortable – it might help extend your trip a little longer!

6. Practice “Man Overboard” Awareness

Show kids what to do if someone falls in: stay calm, keep eyes on the person, and alert an adult immediately. Practicing builds confidence and reduces panic in a real situation.

7. Start Slow, Build Confidence

For younger kids, keep early trips short and calm. Gradually increase trip length and adventure as they grow comfortable and confident on the water.

Boating with children is about preparation and awareness. With the right precautions, your family can enjoy safe, happy adventures on the water for years to come.
